Dinner at 1800: Pork Chops Bavarian

I am finally back after a much needed break! Not needed for just the reasons I thought…but also due to holidays and an unexpected surgery! That’s right, I got the dreaded appendicitis. I’m just grateful we caught it in time thanks to God’s grace in telling me my feeling of illness was not normal.

But, due partially to recovery, my first Dinner at 1800 post of the new year is a week late. I am sure you will still enjoy it, though! Technically recorded last fall, today’s recipe was lots of fun to try! Don’t miss out on both the promo video and the actual reel over on Instagram! All my thanks to my sister, Tianna, who did the filming for me.

Step One: Brown pork chops. Straight forward enough. It doesn’t say at what temperature or how brown or anything like that, but I felt experienced enough to be fairly confident. Maybe a little too confident. I probably should have browned them more.

Step Two: After removing them, I was instructed to put in a pound and a half of raw sauerkraut. Now, I’m not going to lie, I don’t know if there’s a difference between canned and raw…but I used canned. Add in some seasonings, onion (which, being me, I skipped), and then pour tomatoes over it – an entire can plus six sliced tomatoes! I couldn’t fit everything, but I tried. And then sliced potatoes on top of that (how many was not defined, but I assumed enough for a layer) – by this time, I was becoming afraid there wouldn’t be room for the pork chops!

Step Three: Lay pork chops on top – I was relieved to find I could indeed fit them…just barely…and simmer for an hour. Yup, an entire hour!

Step Four: See what my husband thinks!! For the record, it was delicious. We served it as dinner for all three of us – me, Daniel, and Tianna (my sister and filmographer – is that the right term? Reel maker? Recorder? You get the idea). I would totally make this again – just maybe more salt and pepper and brown the meat a little more.

So what do you think? Is this a recipe you’d try? Or have you tried anything similar?
